FRANCE TOURING SITES
One of the highlights of our tour in Normandy is Mont Saint-Michel- English: Saint Michael's Mount) is an island commune in Normandy, France. It is located approximately 0.6 miles off the country's northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. 247 acres in size, the island has a population of 44 (2009). The island has held strategic fortifications since ancient times, and since the eighth century has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name. The structural composition of the town exemplifies the feudal society that constructed it: On top, God, the abbey and monastery; below this, the great halls; then stores and housing; and at the bottom, outside the walls, fishermen's and farmers' housing.
Its unique position of being an island only 656 yards from land made it readily accessible on low tide to the many pilgrims that traveled there to go to the abbey. Equally, this position made it readily defensible as an incoming tide stranded, or drowned, would-be attackers. By capitalizing on this natural defense, the Mont remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War with a small garrison successfully defending it against a full attack by the English in 1433. The reverse benefits of its natural defense was not lost on Louis XI who turned The Mont into a state prison and thereafter the abbey started to be used more regularly as a jail during the Ancient Régime from the sixteenth century.
Mont Saint- Michel is one of France's most recognizable landmarks. For all of us foodies, the omelet was invented here by Mere Poulard at her Inn. La Mere Poulard’s in a country restaurant at the foot of Mont Saint-Michel. The reputation of La Mere Poulard- who died in 1931 at the age of eighty- was built around a single menu, one that always included an omelet, ham, fried sole, lamb, potatoes, roast chicken, salad and dessert. But it’s the omelet- creamy, golden and puffy, almost like a soufflé- that keeps everyone coming back. We will see the woman prettily dressed in traditional grab, beating the eggs in shiny copper bowls and cooking the omelets in long- handled pans over wood burning fires. Mere Poulard came up with the quick egg dish for pilgrims that were hungry and arriving at different times during the day and night. Her secret ingredient was the sea salt water.
